Per chi usa jabber.linux.it come server Jabber e usa la funzionalità web presence agent, ho creato una applicazione in PHP che rende più facile personalizzare il modo in cui volete visualizzare il vostro stato: http://www.linux.it/~steko/presence/.
È ancora un esperimento perciò ci saranno certamente problemi, che potete segnalarmi.

È cambiato tutto, ci dicono. Ma non vedo niente di diverso, oggi.
È impossibile iniziare un movimento con la decisione di essere ragionevoli.

Ho avuto nel senso che l’ho avuta nel passato, ma questa idea si è trasformata in qualcosa di concreto che al momento esiste e scalcia.

Per la gestione della documentazione su grandi cantieri, con decine di persone, è utile progettare un sistema ad accesso distribuito, in cui chiunque ha accesso alla modifica e immissione di nuovi dati venga identificato, in modo che sia possibile risalire all’autore di ogni informazione. La gestione delle versioni avviene tramite un sistema tipo CVS-SVN, oppure wiki.
Andrebbe privilegiata quanto più possibile l’adozione di una piattaforma web, di per sé platform independent, con utilizzo di applicazioni AJAX tale da creare un ambiente amichevole.
Spero che la mia prossima buona idea sia anche retribuita. Io ce l’ho già pronta.
Domenica 22 luglio, ore 20:30. Il volo AP4253 da Heraklion a Roma Fiumicino atterra, con 45 minuti di ritardo.
Ore 20:40. I passeggeri, nel cui sfigato novero è incluso il sottoscritto, sono ancora a bordo. Manca la scala per scendere. Il comandante si scusa.
Ore 20:45. Finalmente arriva una scala. Scendiamo dall’aereo e saliamo sul mezzo che ci porta al terminal.
Ore 20:55. Dopo aver girato tutte le piste, arriviamo al terminal A.
Ore 21:00. Ci accorgiamo che il terminal A è quello dei voli nazionali, mentre i nostri bagagli sono andati correttamente al terminal B/C. Chiediamo chiarimenti al personale AirOne, che ci fa scortare dalla Guarda di Finanza fino al terminal giusto.
Ore 21:20. Attraversato tutto l’aeroporto dall’esterno, rientriamo dall’uscita del terminal C, dopo che non ci avevano fatto entrare al B. Raggiungiamo dall’interno i nastri del terminal B, dove erano i nostri bagagli.
Ore 21:30. Recuperati vittoriosamente i nostri bagagli, usciamo trionfanti verso le auto.
Ore 01:30. Tocco il letto e mi addormento. Ho passato un mese nell’interno di Creta, lontano dalla civiltà e dalla tecnologia. Si stava così bene…
Oggi sono riuscito a fare 2 esami di archeologia medievale che stavo preparando — con impegno variabile — da parecchi mesi. Il problema è che ad agosto difficilmente riuscirò a partecipare a uno scavo medievale, e invece avrei voluto, ché sarei qui per quello.
Comunque sia, non mi dispiace essere prossimo alla fine della mia vita universitaria, visto lo sfascio a cui sta andando incontro l’accademia italiana, sollecitata da mazzate bilaterali e bipartisan…
If you try to convert a PSD image with layers to a web format like PNG using ImageMagick, you’ll get a PNG image for each layer and that’s probably not what you want.
Here’s the -flatten option that helps you:
find . -name *.psd -exec convert '{}' -flatten \
`basename '{}' .psd`.png \;

Last week I was looking at some slides from a lecture here at university. One slide caught my attention more than others, it was a map with some pie charts representing the distribution of different vegetal species in quadrats of an archaeological sites. Quite common and ordinary stuff in publications, indeed.
The first question rising to my mind was: how do I do this in GRASS?. It turned out that there wasn’t a module to automagically count the number of points within an area, and generate a report that keeps also information about the distribution of different classes. The chart stuff is already available since GRASS 6.0 and before, but I needed a module that could generate data from which I could plot charts.
Thanks to Giovanni Allegri, Markus Neteler I could end up with a bash script that does all this quite well, even though a bit slowly. Hamish Bowman helped a lot pointing out some unsafe pieces of code and helping for a faster code. v.count.points.sh is now the first of a series of tutorials about spatial analysis (this being a very simple form of analysis) for archaeology on the Quantitative Archaeology wiki.

The argument is simple: government-funded and approved agencies such as the Ordnance Survey and UK Hydrographic Office and Highways Agency collect data using our funds, but then charge users and companies for access to it.
That restricts innovation and artificially restricts the number and variety of organisations that can offer services based on that most useful data – which our taxes have helped to collect.
We need to do more and more lobbying in this direction here in Italy, for free geodata. Having support from the media would be great, but we all know that they’re totally absorbed by seeling more copies and dumbing down people’s brains.
